Mustang, a remote region in northern Nepal, is renowned for its unique culture, stunning landscapes, and ancient monasteries. This high-altitude desert region offers a glimpse into a bygone era, with its well-preserved Tibetan Buddhist traditions and breathtaking scenery. With a low population density of 4 people per square kilometer, most of the inhabitants belong to the Tibetan-speaking Thakali ethnic group.
The region is home to the famous Mustang Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient rock paintings and mud-brick villages. Mustang is characterized by its arid, high-altitude landscapes, including deep gorges, barren hills, and towering peaks. Popular treks in Mustang include the Gateway to Mustang and Mustang Lo-Manthang Trek, which take visitors through remote villages, ancient monasteries, and stunning natural landscapes.
Often referred to as the Forbidden Kingdom due to its historical inaccessibility, this region of the Tibetan plateau rises dramatically from 1300 to over 6000 meters above sea level. It shares more in common with western Tibet than with other parts of Nepal, both in terms of topography and cultural heritage.
The area’s high altitude and remote location contribute to its unique characteristics, making it a captivating destination.
