The Pasang Lhamu Foundation was founded in 1993 with the goal of improving the lives of Nepalese people, particularly women and children. It was motivated by the legacy of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first woman from Nepal to summit Mount Everest. Sonam founded the Foundation in the middle of the 1990s with the intention of honoring Pasang Lhamu and introducing Nepali women to climbing and mountaineering.
Since then, the organization has developed into a non-profit, non-political group dedicated to a range of humanitarian concerns.
The Foundation’s first goals were to increase knowledge of climbing and mountaineering among local women and to inspire and motivate them to participate in these activities. In addition to scholarships and training possibilities, it even built a climbing wall on the outskirts of Kathmandu.
This wall, which is the site of the yearly National Climbing Competition, is still accessible to the general public and makes money from admission fees, with a little charge for ladies from the area.
The Foundation’s current objective has been broadened to encompass skills development, healthcare, education, and emergency help after natural catastrophes. It highlights the value of education for women and girls by starting schools, giving scholarships, and encouraging literacy in rural communities.
Among the healthcare activities are running health camps, supplying medical supplies, and making it easier for people to receive critical medical services, especially in isolated areas. In the wake of natural catastrophes, the Foundation works on rehabilitation initiatives to assist communities in rebuilding while also providing emergency relief, including food, shelter, and medical assistance.
With the purchase of the Pasang Lhamu Community College in Kathmandu, which supports the growth and education of more than 1,000 students, the Foundation’s influence is further increased. In addition, it plans celebrations of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s accomplishments, utilizing her life story as a source of inspiration and tenacity to promote women’s rights in Nepal.
Going forward, the Pasang Lhamu Foundation remains dedicated to spreading its impact throughout Nepal. Anyone who has seen Nepal’s natural beauty and friendly people is encouraged to help the organization’s work by making a donation directly while in Nepal or through the official website: pasanglhamufoundation.org
