FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH
SPAIN

Nepal and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1968.
Though initially limited, ties were strengthened in the 1980s through high-level exchanges, including King Birendra’s 1983 State Visit to Spain and King Juan Carlos’s reciprocal visit to Nepal in 1987. These visits fostered cultural cooperation and laid the groundwork for future engagement.
Since the 2000s, relations have gained momentum through tourism, mountaineering, and Spain’s development assistance in rural development, education, and heritage preservation. Today, relations are friendly though not deeply institutionalized, with Spain represented by an honorary consulate in Kathmandu.
