Nepal and Russia (formerly USSR) established diplomatic relations on July 20, 1956, marking the beginning of a significant partnership between the Himalayan nation and the global superpower.

This relationship was formalized with the opening of the Soviet Embassy in Kathmandu on October 4, 1959, followed by Nepal’s embassy in Moscow on July 27, 1961.

High-level exchanges solidified early ties, with King Mahendra visiting the USSR in 1958 and Soviet President Marshal Kliment Y. Voroshilov reciprocated with a state visit to Nepal in 1960. King Birendra later strengthened these connections during his 1976 visit to the Soviet Union.
