FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH

The longstanding relation between Nepal and Japan goes back to the 18th century when Japanese Zen Buddhist scholar Reverend Ekai Kawaguchi visited Nepal en route to Tibet.
Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1956, initiating what would become one of Nepal’s most significant international partnerships. Imperial exchanges have been instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties, beginning with HRH Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko’s 1960 visit to Nepal. HM King Birendra’s 1978 journey to Japan reciprocated this goodwill, while Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko’s 1985 state visit to Nepal further cemented diplomatic relations.
Today, this partnership encompasses comprehensive development cooperation, with Japan serving as one of Nepal’s largest bilateral donors supporting critical infrastructure, education, healthcare, and hydropower initiatives. Japan’s response to Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake demonstrated the depth of this relationship through substantial reconstruction assistance. The relationship continues to evolve through increasing migration flows, with thousands of Nepalis now living in Japan as workers and students under various programs.
