Nepal and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1958, marking the beginning of a partnership that has grown significantly over the decades.
This bilateral relationship has been strengthened through state visits, trade agreements, development cooperation, and humanitarian assistance.
Both nations established permanent diplomatic missions early in their relationship—Nepal opening its embassy in Germany on July 5, 1965, while Germany established its embassy in Kathmandu in 1963. Diplomatic ties were formalized with high-level exchanges, notably HM King Mahendra and Queen Ratna’s state visit to West Germany in 1964, where they met with President Heinrich Luebke. This tradition continued when HM King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya made another state visit in October 1986.
Throughout these years, Germany has become one of Nepal’s most important European development partners, focusing assistance on renewable energy, healthcare and sustainable economic development. Following Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake, Germany provided significant humanitarian aid, further strengthening the relationship.
