FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH
CHINA

We are equals; we cannot say one country is superior or inferior to the other. We very much appreciate the way of speaking.
– Chairman Mao
The foundation of Nepal-China relationship was cultural and spiritual exchanges. From Araniko’s contribution and influence on Tibetan and Chinese art to Bhrikuti’s marriage to King Songtsen Gampo, Nepal shares a deep historical connection with China.
The official bilateral relation between Nepal and China is marked by the Sino-Nepalese Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed on April 28, 1960, by the two countries. However, it was the 1960 Sino-Nepal boundary agreement that boosted relations between the countries. A year later, on 5 October 1961, King Mahendra signed the Boundary Treaty at Beijing during his State Visit to the country. About 100,000 people in Beijing held a grand gathering at the Workers’ Stadium to warmly welcome the visit of the King and Queen of Nepal.
