FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH
INDIA

Relations between Nepal and India transcend the confines of customary treaties and diplomatic conventions… As relationships are more important than rules, our engagement has a much greater depth of understanding and broader sweep of vision.
– HM King Gyandendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev
Nepal and India’s relation isn’t limited to geographical proximity or political exchange. The two countries share close religious, cultural and historical ties, going back as far as the holy text of Ramayana. But it wasn’t until the India–Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 17 June 1947 that formal diplomatic relations were established.
A major milestone in the Nepal-India ties however came in November of 1950 when the Indian government assisted King Tribhuvan and his family to escape to India and overthrow the Rana regime. Throughout the years, the royal family of Nepal has been diligent in maintaining cordial and friendly ties with India while holding Nepal’s position as a sovereign, independent state. Each monarch and royal member since King Tribhuvan have held regular state visits to India to foster the diplomatic ties, and Indian leaders have held high-level visits to Nepal on their part for the same reason.
