FOREIGN RELATIONS WITH
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

You help all nations to advance by making clear what you cherish most—and want most to see all men cherish: the sovereignty of peoples, the independence of states, man’s right to live at peace, man’s duty to cooperate for peace. These principles, Your Majesties, unite our two peoples.
– President Johnson, November 01, 1967
Despite geographical distance, Nepal and the US share close diplomatic ties. The US was the second country after the UK to establish bilateral relations with Nepal.
The relations began in 1958, after which the American Embassy was established in Nepal in 1959. However, diplomatic relations were strengthened with King Mahendra’s first State Visit to the US in 1960. Seven years later His Majesty visited the States again following an invitation from President Johnson. Over the years the countries have exchanged high level visits which has further helped grow and strengthen the ties.
