HM Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah

Her Majesty Queen Komal Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah is the Queen consort of His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. In her role as the Queen consort, she supported her husband, His Majesty King Gyanendra, in fulfilling his role as the King of Nepal.
Her Majesty is passionate about music. As a young woman, she enrolled in the prestigious Kalanidhi Sangeet Mahavidhyala in Kathmandu from where she graduated with a degree in music.
HM Queen Komal has always been an active member of the royal family, maintaining appearances at various events on behalf of the crown.
Her Majesty also accompanied HM King Gyanendra on most official and unofficial visits within Nepal and abroad. Outside of her royal duties, Queen Komal is an avid flower enthusiast. She enjoys learning about new flower species and often spends her free time tending to her private garden.

EARLY LIFE

Her Majesty Komal Rajya Laxmi Rana was born on 18 February 1951 to General Kendra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana and his wife Shree Rajya Laxmi Devi Rana. She was the second of their three daughters, all of whom were married to the three princes of Nepal.

Her eldest sister was Her Majesty Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah who was married to His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. Her younger sister was Her Royal Highness Princess Prekshya Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah who was married to Her Royal Highness Prince Dhirendra Bir Bikram Shah. She also has two brothers, Suraj Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana and Uday Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana.

Education

HRH Komal Rajya Laxmi Rana received her primary education at St. Helen’s Convent, Kurseong, India. She was later educated in St. Mary’s Convent in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur alongside her sisters and received her School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from the same school.

Her love for music led her to the prestigious Kalanidhi Sangeet Mahavidhyala in Kathmandu from where she graduated with a proficiency certificate in music.

FAMILY LIFE

On 1 May 1970, HRH Prince Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah and HRH Komal were married in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Her first years of marital life were quiet and blissfully private. As a young royal couple, they supported Their Majesties through official duties and represented the crown on official visits both overseas and at home.

On 30 December 1971, they had their first child, His Royal Highness Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah. Seven years later on 21 February 1978, they were blessed with a daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Prearana Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah.

The royal couple are also blessed with 4 grandchildren. The marital union of their son HRH Prince Paras and his wife, HRH Princess Himani Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah have bore them 3 grandchildren: HRH Purnika Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah, HRH Hridayendra Bir Bikram Shah, and HRH Kritika Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah. They also have one grandson, Parthav Bahadur Singh, from their daughter’s marriage to Kumar Raj Bahadur Singh.

WORK AS A PRINCESS

Her Royal Highness was an active member of the royal family, supporting a number of charitable causes and organizations, and representing Her Majesty at different functions as part of her royal duties.

Princess Komal also began to serve as a member of the Raj Sabha soon after her wedding. In 1981, she accompanied HRH Prince Gyanendra to the royal wedding of HRH Prince Charles (now HM King Charles III) and Lady Diana as representatives of Their Majesties King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya.

She also led Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah’s 62nd Auspicious Birthday Celebration Committee as its Chairperson. She also chaired the Silver Jubilee Celebration Committee for Nepal Children’s Organisation.

HONOURS

Following His Majesty King Gyanendra’s ascension to the throne, Her Majesty Queen Komal was bestowed the title of Shree Paanch Bada Maharani (Her Majesty The Queen of Nepal).
